ASEAN advances regional energy cooperation with new strategic agreements

Progress on six priority initiatives for 2025 was also reviewed

The 43rd ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Energy marked a pivotal moment as member states reached consensus on strategic priorities to strengthen regional energy cooperation.

The gathering focused on advancing shared goals to promote sustainable energy development across Southeast Asia. This is reported by Vietnam News Agency (VNA), a partner of TV BRICS.

Dato' Haji Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), announced the finalisation of key documents, including an enhanced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) and the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) for 2026–2030.

The upgraded APG MoU aims to guide cross-border electricity grid projects and is set to be signed at the upcoming ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting in Kuala Lumpur this October.

The meeting also reviewed progress on six priority initiatives for 2025, such as developing an underground cable framework, advancing the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement, launching an ASEAN Energy Efficiency Database, and establishing an investment platform to support sustainable building projects.

Other topics included the ASEAN Renewable Energy Long-term Roadmap, the Renewable Energy Certificate framework, and plans for nuclear power plant implementation.
