Egypt hosts Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance

The dialogue aimed to strengthen the implementation of the African Union's AI strategy

The closing session of the second Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance was chaired by Amr Talaat, Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology. It brought together members of the African Union (AU) AI working group, representatives from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and AI experts from Africa.

The dialogue aimed to strengthen the implementation of the African Union's continental AI strategy and reflects Egypt's leading role as chair of the AU AI Working Group.

Talaat said the event brought together officials from more than 20 countries and global organisations to discuss the implementation of the African AI Strategy, the underlying principles of the African AI Charter and a roadmap to achieve the strategic goals. He commended the collaborative efforts of African countries.

Amr Goweily, Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security, emphasised the need to include AI in the Global Digital Compact with the active participation of Egypt and other African countries in its development.

Angela Cassell Bush, Commissioner of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, underscored African nations’ commitment to leveraging AI for development, particularly by raising awareness and empowering youth. This is reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

During the sessions, the OECD presented best practices on the implementation of the African AI Strategy, which was adopted at the AU mid-year summit in July 2024. Discussions focused on fostering international and regional cooperation, developing practical steps, securing resources for implementation and integrating AI into key sectors such as public services, health, education and agriculture, as well as establishing an African AI ethics charter.
