Egypt is among world leaders in cybersecurity

These achievements cement Egypt's position as one of the technological leaders on the African continent and emphasise its commitment to a digital future

Egypt has become one of the 12 highest performing countries in the Global Cybersecurity Index 2024, scoring 100 points. This was announced by the Cabinet Media Centre, publishing a series of infographics to mark World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. The visuals highlight Egypt's achievements in digital transformation and the development of the ICT sector, seeing this progress as key to the country's sustainable development. This is reported by Sada El-Balad, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the data presented, the country achieved results in several international rankings at once. Egypt improved its position in the Network Readiness Index, rising six points to rank 85th in 2024, and also made a significant leap in the Government AI Readiness Index, from 111th to 65th from 2019 to 2024.

The ICT sector's economic performance has also improved markedly. Its growth rate reached 14.4 per cent in 2023/2024, almost doubling from 8.4 per cent in 2013/2014. Public investment in the sector has increased 45 times. The contribution of digital and electronic technologies to GDP increased to 5.8 per cent and exports of digital services quadrupled to US$6.9 billion.

Internet access has also increased dramatically. The average speed of fixed Internet tripled to 77.9 Mbps, while the number of mobile Internet users almost quadrupled to 88.8 million. The number of high-speed Internet subscribers reached 11.7 million.

Egypt is actively developing its telecommunications infrastructure: licences have been issued for the launch of 5G and eSIM technology, and over 3,000 new communication towers have been installed.

The digital transformation has also embraced the New Administrative Capital. All government buildings in the country were connected to a fibre-optic network.
