Indonesia's NDB membership signifies a strategic move to strengthen South-South cooperation, unlock development financing, and enhance its role in global finance
Indonesia has formally joined the New Development Bank (NDB), the BRICS-led financial institution, marking its active participation with an initial US$1 billion investment. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto delivered a welcoming speech at the National Leadership Meeting of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) in Jakarta, highlighting the significance of this move.
Minister Hartarto stated that Indonesia’s entry into the NDB reflects its commitment to strengthening cooperation among Global South countries, a principle rooted in the spirit of the Asia-Africa Conference. “Indonesia becomes a member and is immediately participating actively in the preparations of the NDB,” Hartarto affirmed.
He further noted that this membership is expected to expand market access and deepen collaboration with major developing economies. This strategic partnership with the NDB signifies Indonesia’s intent to play a more prominent role in international financial forums.
Indonesia’s official entry as the 10th BRICS member in January 2025 automatically conferred membership in the New Development Bank (NDB), according to ANTARA.
Experts claimed that this accession offers Indonesia enhanced access to development financing for key national projects and, through its BRICS affiliation, opens avenues for new market engagement and collaborative initiatives with other Global South economies.
