Iran ranks fourth globally in sheep and livestock production
Iran could improve its global standing to second place
Iran has secured the fourth position globally in the production of sheep and light livestock, according to Mansour Pourian, head of Iran’s Livestock Security Council.
With a national herd surpassing 50 million head, and a production capacity exceeding 80 million, the country remains a major player in the global livestock sector. This is reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
Seasonal fluctuations in livestock numbers mean that in some months, the population of light livestock ranges from 65 to 67 million head, Pourian noted.
According to the source, experts believe that Iran could improve its global standing to second place if favourable conditions are established. This would require enhanced infrastructure, reduced production costs, and a more strategic approach to trade management and policy support.
Pourian emphasised the country’s strong historical performance, noting that in the 1990s, Iran was ranked eighth worldwide in livestock exports. In 2013 and 2014 alone, the country exported over 1.2 million head of light livestock and around 70,000 head of heavy livestock, underlining its capacity as a leading exporter in the region.
