Iranian scientists develop highly durable 3D-printed concrete and smart lithium batteries

These breakthroughs were pioneered by researchers at Iran's Amirkabir University of Technology

Researchers at Iran's Amirkabir University of Technology have made advancements in the fields of construction and energy storage by developing highly durable 3D-printed concrete and smart lithium batteries enhanced with natural compounds. This was reported by  Pars Today, a partner of TV BRICS.

3D concrete printing is an advancement in the construction industry, enabling the creation of complex structures with unprecedented speed and precision. However, the layered structure of such concrete can be vulnerable to environmental conditions, particularly freezing.

To address this issue, researchers introduced an air-entraining additive that improves the concrete’s durability.  By generating fine air bubbles within the structure, this additive enhances resistance to freeze-thaw cycles and prevents damage.

Scientists also investigated the formation of a passive layer on electrodes that reduces the capacity and lifespan of lithium batteries – the power source for portable electronic devices, electric vehicles, and modern energy storage systems.

They have taken an innovative approach by using curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, to enhance battery performance. Curcumin forms a stable protective layer on the electrodes, preventing undesirable  solid electrolyte interphase formation and thereby increasing capacity, thermal stability, and overall lifespan.

According to the media outlet, these innovations highlight Iran’s growing role in cutting-edge science. The durable 3D-printed concrete could transform rapid infrastructure development. Meanwhile, turmeric-enhanced lithium batteries offer a greener, longer-lasting solution for energy storage.
