The research findings are expected to provide a basis for forecasting future environmental changes
An international scientific expedition has set off from the port of Vladivostok, with the aim of studying the climatic past of the Bering Sea and the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. The research vessel Akademik Lavrentyev, which has undergone major modernisation, has departed on a 45-day voyage, according to Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
The expedition includes 25 scientists, including specialists from the V. I. Il’ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the First Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources. They will collect samples of bottom sediments, zooplankton, and volcanic ash, natural “archives” that preserve data on past climate cycles and the evolution of marine ecosystems.
According to Wang Jun, Acting Consul General of the PRC in Vladivostok, the main task of the scientists is to conduct joint research in the fields of palaeoceanography and palaeoclimatology. The research findings are expected to provide a basis for forecasting future environmental changes.
Director of the Pacific Oceanological Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Denis Makarov, stated that this is the first joint expedition following a forced pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasised that it is of great importance for deepening ties between Russia and China.
