Brazilian athlete sets world-leading 400m hurdles time at Brazilian championships

Brazilian athlete Alison dos Santos produced the fastest men's 400m hurdles performance of 2026 after winning the national title with an outstanding time of 46.48 seconds at the Brazilian Championships in Sao Paulo, as reported by Agência Brasil.

The reigning world champion and Olympic medallist dominated the final from the opening stages, securing gold with a performance that moves him to the top of the 2026 world rankings. The result overtakes the previous season-leading mark of 46.61 seconds, restoring the Brazilian athlete to the number one position globally.

The winning time ranks among the finest performances of Dos Santos' career, second only to his personal best of 46.29 seconds, set during his victorious campaign at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

Matheus Lima claimed the silver medal in 47.97 seconds, while Francisco Guilherme Vianna completed the podium after finishing in 49.38 seconds.

Following the race, Dos Santos said he hoped his performance would inspire the next generation of athletes to believe they could compete at the highest level. He emphasised the importance of trusting the training process and striving for continuous improvement while representing Brazil in international competition.
