Cape Town to host the 2nd Green Hydrogen Summit from 16 to 17 October

African regional and continental cooperation is key to realising the potential of green hydrogen

The South African Department of Electricity will host the second South Africa Green Hydrogen Summit (SAGHS) on 16-17 October at the Century City Convention Centre in Cape Town.

Green hydrogen and associated large-scale renewable energy generation has the potential to support the expansion of electricity transmission infrastructure, the emergence of additional renewable energy generation capacity and to support local industry development.

This makes green hydrogen a key component of South Africa's future energy mix and one of the five pillars of South Africa's investment strategy.

The inaugural SAGHS Summit in November 2022 showcased South Africa as a large-scale, low-cost, world-class green hydrogen production centre.

The 2023 summit aims to take the next step by focusing on the production and application of green hydrogen.

African regional and continental cooperation is key to realising the potential of green hydrogen as a vector for reindustrialising South Africa's economy in a sustainable manner.

This year's summit will also be more pan-African, with Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa taking over as Chair of the African Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA) on behalf of South Africa until September 2023.

AGHA is a voluntary coalition of African countries that have significant green hydrogen production potential and seek continental cooperation in this area.

SAGHS 2022 builds on the strong foundation of South Africa's green hydrogen policy. SAGHS 2023 participants will make important statements on the following issues:

– progress towards the completion of a South African green hydrogen commercialisation strategy;

– development of a Northern Cape provincial green hydrogen masterplan;

– progress on the development of green hydrogen strategies in the Western Cape and Gauteng;

– Cabinet approval of the South African Investment Strategy, which sees green hydrogen as one of the areas with significant growth and investment potential, as reported by the official website of the South African government.
