Ethiopia aims to set new world record for tree planting

Millions of people across the country took to the streets to plant 600 million saplings

Ethiopia has set two tree planting records of its own in the past five years, including planting 566 million saplings in a single day last year. This is reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

This massive tree planting event is part of the national Green Legacy Initiative, which was launched in 2019. The initiative aims to plant 7.5 billion saplings within a few years.

Numerous Ethiopians are participating in the drive, including diplomats and foreign nationals.

The Green Legacy Initiative has contributed to the increase in forest cover in Ethiopia. In the last five years, 32.5 billion saplings have been planted.

During this initiative, the total number of trees planted is expected to reach 40 billion by the end of the rainy season.

The Green Legacy Initiative aims to improve the environmental situation in the country, increase forest cover, create new green spaces, and rehabilitate degraded land. This will help to ensure food security for the population and mitigate the effects of climate change.
