India’s rooftop solar sector to surge 75% in two years

With 8–13 GW of new capacity expected by 2027

India's rooftop solar sector is on track for significant growth, with capacity expected to expand from 17 GW in fiscal year 2025 to 30 GW by fiscal year 2027, according to a new industry report. This rapid growth reflects the country's accelerating transition to renewable energy, with solar power playing an increasingly vital role in India's clean energy strategy. The commercial and industrial segment is anticipated to be a major driver of this expansion, as businesses increasingly adopt solar solutions to reduce operational costs and meet sustainability objectives.

Government initiatives are providing strong momentum to the sector, helping to accelerate deployment. Regional trends show Gujarat maintaining its leadership position. Currently accounting for about 20 per cent of India's total solar capacity, the rooftop solar segment is gaining importance due to its nature and direct benefits to the users.

As reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS, with robust policy support, declining technology costs, and growing consumer awareness, India's rooftop solar market has entered a phase of rapid expansion. Industry experts project this segment will play a crucial role in helping the country achieve its ambitious target of 300 GW solar capacity by 2030 while supporting India's broader transition to sustainable energy sources. The next two years are expected to be particularly transformative, with the market potentially adding 8–13 GW of new rooftop solar capacity.
