Major water diversion project benefits nearly 200 million people in China

It has improved the distribution of water resources between the north and south of the country

The South-to-North Water Diversion Project has supplied over 90 billion cubic metres of water and benefited nearly 200 million people. This was reported by China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS, citing China’s Ministry of Water Resources and the China South-to-North Water Diversion Corporation.

The infrastructure operates along two main routes. The central route begins at the Danjiangkou Reservoir in Hubei Province, passes through Henan and Hebei provinces, and supplies water to Beijing and Tianjin. Water began flowing along this route on 12 December 2014. Of the total volume of water diverted, 80 billion cubic metres were allocated to this route.

A further nearly 10 billion cubic metres were allocated to the eastern route, which was launched in November 2013. Water flows along this route from Jiangsu Province to Tianjin and Shandong Province.

The project has created an interconnected system of water channels between China’s regions, enabling the coordination of water distribution and the organisation of joint supply from multiple sources. This solution has provided resources to 48 large and medium-sized cities and 195 million people along the routes, significantly improving the quality of drinking water in the north of the country.

It is noted that the water redistribution project reached full capacity in 2014. Since then, it has succeeded in making the water supply more reliable and improving water quality. The project also plays an important role in flood prevention, combating drought and mitigating the effects of natural disasters.
