Renewable energy accounts for record 56 per cent of China's total installed capacity

China is actively developing a green economy in an effort to meet its climate goals, with renewable energy as one of the main drivers of this process


Renewable energy installations accounted for 86 per cent of China's total new installed capacity in 2024, with the cumulative installed capacity of renewable energy reaching a record 56 per cent of the country's total capacity. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

By the end of 2024, China's cumulative installed renewable energy capacity was 1.889 billion kilowatts, up 25 per cent from a year earlier. Hydroelectric capacity totalled 436 million kilowatts, wind power 521 million kilowatts, solar 887 million kilowatts and biomass 46 million kilowatts.

Last year was the second time China's cumulative installed renewable energy capacity exceeded 50 per cent of the country's total installed capacity. It was the first time this share was reached by the end of 2023.

In addition, renewable power generation rose to 3.46 trillion kilowatt hours in 2024, up 19 per cent year-on-year and accounting for about 35 per cent of total power generation. Combined power generation from wind and solar installations was 1.83 trillion kilowatt-hours, up 27 per cent from 2023. This amount is equivalent to tertiary electricity consumption in 2024 and exceeds household consumption, which was 1.49 trillion kilowatt-hours.
