Russian dance troupe from Rostov-on-Don captivates audiences in Chennai

Russian Dance Festival 2026 draws full houses in Tamil Nadu, highlighting cultural dialogue between India and Russia

A Russian dance ensemble from Rostov-on-Don performed in Chennai as part of the Russian Dance Festival 2026, Trinity Mirror, a partner of TV BRICS, reports.

The festival is taking place in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and will run until 9 February 2026. The opening performance in Chennai attracted a large audience.

The festival was inaugurated by Valeriy Khodzhaev, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Chennai. Cultural and educational representatives from India and Russia attended the opening ceremony. The event is part of ongoing cultural exchanges between the two countries.

The 17-member ensemble presented a programme that included classical, folk and contemporary Russian dance. The repertoire featured Cossack dances, Lezginka from the Caucasus, Gypsy-themed choreography, classical waltzes to music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, as well as contemporary compositions incorporating acrobatic elements. The programme concluded with a sequence based on Soviet-era songs.

After Chennai, the festival is scheduled to take place in Coimbatore, Mettupalayam, Vellore, and Sivakasi, expanding the geography of the tour within Tamil Nadu. The organisers note that the project aims to promote cultural interaction between India and Russia through performing arts.
