About 1,600 doctors begin providing care to people in Brazil through More Doctors programme

Some 1,600 doctors from the More Doctors programme have started providing care in 654 municipalities in Brazil to reduce inequalities in access to health services. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health, these professionals will join the 24,770 doctors already working in the country, and more are expected to join the initiative.

According to Wellington Carvalho, head of the Department of Primary Health Care Management, the terms of the programme have been changed to make it more attractive to professionals.

"Studies around the world show that quality primary health care can solve up to 80 per cent of the health problems of an individual, family or community. It is therefore very important that we pay special attention to this issue," Carvalho noted.

In 2023, the More Doctors programme opened more than a thousand new positions in the Amazonas region, and there was a 45 per cent increase in the number of indigenous health workers (from 403 to 703). It also provided 136 positions for prison medical teams and 112 positions in mobile clinics.

The Brazilian regions with the largest number of professionals were São Pablo, Bahia, Minas Gerais and others.
