China-Ethiopia partnership aims to strengthen African public policies with creation of Global South Research Centre

The Chinese government has committed to creating a Global South Research Centre to facilitate greater stakeholder engagement in public policy discussions. This announcement followed a meeting between Ahmed Shide, Ethiopian Finance Minister and Lu Hao, President of the Development Research Centre of the State Council of China.

During the discussion, Lu Hao highlighted that at the 3rd FOCAC Summit, Chinese authorities encouraged dialogue between think tanks to advance public policies in Africa, as reported by Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.

The Global South Research Centre is expected to develop policy frameworks through extensive dialogues, supporting the sustainable development of African nations.

Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide emphasised the importance of the centre for global development, noting that Ethiopia has significantly benefited from China's growth. He cited China's substantial financial and engineering contributions to infrastructure, manufacturing, and other development initiatives across Africa.

Shide praised China’s economic partnership with Ethiopia and Africa more broadly, describing it as a key driver of Ethiopia's development.
