China's scientists discover the genomic foundation of wheat’s co-evolution
Chinese scientists, in collaboration with international researchers, have unlocked the genomic foundation of wheat’s co-evolution with its environment and dietary culture, marking a significant milestone in agricultural genetics, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
Through the analysis of Chinese wheat varieties, the study highlights the interplay between wheat’s structural variations and its adaptation to changing habitats and cultural demands.
Focusing on the creation of a comprehensive wheat pangenome, the researchers demonstrated its potential to revolutionise breeding programmes. By studying genomic traits of key wheat varieties, scientists aim to enhance future breeding efforts and increase crop yields across diverse environmental conditions.
The research team assembled a wheat pangenome using 17 representative Chinese varieties, spanning over 70 years of breeding history. This pangenome captures the genomic diversity of soft wheat, offering insights into how structural variations have shaped wheat’s evolution.
This study not only deciphers the genetic blueprint behind wheat’s adaptability but also provides a robust theoretical framework for breeding wheat varieties tailored to future environmental and market demands. The experts believe that this reinforces China’s leadership in global wheat research while opening pathways to leverage worldwide germplasm resources for sustainable crop development.
