China sets sights on Mars soil retrieval by 2031 in Tianwen-3 mission

The programme aims to conduct comprehensive research on Martian soil samples and exploration data

China has announced its ambitious plans to bring samples of Martian soil back to Earth by approximately 2031 as part of its Tianwen-3 mission, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS. The main scientific objective of this groundbreaking initiative is to search for signs of life on the Red Planet, according to the China Deep Space Exploration Laboratory.

Scheduled for dual launches around 2028, the mission aims to achieve a successful landing on Mars, collect soil samples, and return them to Earth through a single, integrated operation. The designated landing site will also serve as the primary area for sample collection.

The team has shortlisted 86 potential landing sites, primarily focusing on ancient terrains such as Chryse Planitia and Utopia Planitia. These regions, featuring diverse geological landscapes like ancient shorelines, deltas, lakes, and canyon systems, are believed to offer optimal conditions for the preservation of potential ancient life forms.

The mission's scientists emphasised the importance of identifying biosignatures, or indicators of past or present life, by employing surface sampling techniques and drilling methods. They also called for the development of advanced tools specifically designed to detect these vital signatures.

The Tianwen-3 mission will carry internationally developed instruments, reflecting China's commitment to global collaboration. By working with international scientists, the programme aims to conduct comprehensive research on Martian soil samples and exploration data.

In addition to its Mars exploration efforts, China is also preparing for the Tianwen-4 mission, which will focus on studying the Jupiter system, shedding light on the evolution of both the gas giant and its moons.
