Ethiopia accelerates electric vehicle adoption with new charging infrastructure
The country expands renewable energy and electric vehicle networks to boost energy independence and sustainability
Ethiopia has inaugurated a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Addis Ababa, reflecting a strategic push toward sustainable transport, Minister of State for Transport and Logistics Bareo Hassen stated.
The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) led the development as part of the nation’s broader renewable energy agenda, reports Fana Media Corporation, a partner of TV BRICS.
"Expanding renewable energy not only supports environmental sustainability but also reinforces our energy sovereignty by reducing dependence on imported oil and foreign exchange expenditures," Minister Bareo Hassen explained, highlighting Ethiopia’s potential to enhance climate resilience.
Approximately 140,000 electric vehicles now operate across Ethiopia, with additional charging stations under construction in Addis Ababa and regional cities to meet rising demand, the Minister noted.
According to the experts, the initiative aligns with Ethiopia’s green economy strategy. Ethiopia’s progress in renewable energy and electric mobility demonstrates the impact of consistent policy, signalling a commitment to a sustainable, self-reliant energy future for the nation.
