Ethiopia accelerates green transport revolution with electric mobility drive

Ethiopia to modernise its transportation networks by integrating air, rail, and road systems

Ethiopia is making significant strides in reducing carbon emissions and transforming urban mobility by embracing electric transportation, according to Ethiopia’s State Minister of Transport and Logistics, Bareo Hassen.

Speaking at the Ethiopia-E Mobility Symposium titled "Pioneering Green Mobility: The Ethiopian Experience", Hassen outlined the nation’s vision for sustainable transport, as reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Held at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, the symposium brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to highlight Ethiopia’s advances in green mobility. The Ethiopian government has positioned electric mobility at the core of its strategy to combat climate change, focusing on integrating electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy into the nation’s transport sector.

Hassen emphasised the rapid growth of private electric vehicle assembly plants and the government’s commitment to developing EV infrastructure, investing in clean energy technologies, and fostering public-private partnerships to accelerate the shift to greener transport solutions.

Ethiopia’s approach also leverages its abundant renewable energy resources, such as hydropower and wind energy, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and minimise environmental impacts.

The nation’s ambitions extend beyond EVs. Ethiopia is working to modernise its transportation networks by integrating air, rail, and road systems, aiming to create a more efficient and sustainable urban mobility framework.
