Ethiopia launches advanced research complex to strengthen health security and innovation
New facility positions the country as a regional hub for genomics, pharmaceuticals and science-driven development

Ethiopia has inaugurated a state-of-the-art research complex aimed at accelerating scientific innovation, strengthening health security and advancing pharmaceutical self-sufficiency, reports ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the new facility as the start of a “new scientific era” for Ethiopia and the wider African continent, highlighting its strategic importance beyond infrastructure development.
The complex, located within the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), includes 40 fully equipped laboratories alongside advanced genomics and bioinformatics platforms. These capabilities will enable Ethiopian researchers to conduct high-level medical and scientific studies aligned with global standards.
A central component of the facility is a bioequivalence centre designed to ensure the safety, quality and effectiveness of locally produced medicines. The initiative is expected to reduce reliance on imported pharmaceuticals while supporting the growth of domestic manufacturing capacity.
According to government officials, the centre will play a key role in translating scientific research into practical outcomes. By linking innovation with policymaking, it is set to enhance healthcare delivery, improve emergency preparedness and strengthen resilience to future public health challenges.
The project forms part of Ethiopia’s broader strategy to build self-reliance through homegrown innovation, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare and technology. It also reflects a wider continental push to expand scientific infrastructure and research capabilities.
