India and Sri Lanka launch solar power plant cooperation
On April 5, during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka, the two countries will initiate a joint venture to construct a solar power plant in Sampur, Sri Lanka.
The future cooperation was announced by the President of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, during a parliamentary session following the 2025 budget discussions. He confirmed that an agreement has already been signed to supply electricity from the plant to the national grid at a rate of US$5.97 cents per kilowatt-hour. According to Trinity Mirror, a partner of TV BRICS, Sampur is set to be developed as an energy hub.
President Dissanayake highlighted that Modi’s visit reflects his confidence in Sri Lanka’s stability. Additionally, the head of the state expressed optimism that construction on a new solar power plant in Siyambalanduwa and a 50 MW wind farm in Mannar would commence within the next two months.
Modi’s trip to Sri Lanka will conclude on 6 April. Prior to his arrival, he will attend the Multisectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation summit in Bangkok, Thailand, held on 3-4 April.
