Iran develops medical sponge to accelerate tissue healing and stop bleeding
An Iranian knowledge-based company has announced the development of a new medical sponge designed for specialised surgical procedures, including orthopaedic, neurosurgery, cardiac operations and dentistry.
According to Alalam News, media partner of TV BRICS, the sponge is highly versatile, allowing precise cutting and complete absorption within the body thanks to its unique biological composition. It is also highly effective at stopping bleeding quickly and promoting tissue healing.
The company’s CEO, Hasan Atiabi, highlighted the sponge’s exceptional capacity to absorb blood up to 60 times its own weight. It is made from more than ten biocompatible compounds that enable the body to naturally enhance its ability to halt bleeding and facilitate tissue adhesion at the wound site.
Atiabi added that the innovation not only reduces costs but also improves the safety and accuracy of surgical procedures. The sponge offers quality, durability and flexibility comparable to leading global products and has successfully passed clinical trials.
He emphasised that domestic production of the sponge saves Iran over US$2 million annually in foreign currency and strengthens the country’s self-sufficiency in the biomedical equipment sector, as the technology is entirely home-grown.
