Iran introduces resorbable 3D-printed bone graft for advanced reconstructive surgery

A new material can be used for jawbone reconstruction

Iran has developed a resorbable bone graft produced using 3D technology. It is used to correct severe bone defects, reports Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the knowledge-based company whose specialists created the material, the graft is intended for the reconstruction of various parts of the body, including the bones of the upper and lower jaw. It can be used both for recovery after serious fractures resulting from accidents and for the treatment of congenital conditions. In addition, some samples are designed for the correction of sensitive areas, such as the eye socket.

Once implanted in the body, the material fully dissolves within 18–24 months after installation, meaning there is no need for a second operation to remove it. This distinguishes the development from widely available titanium implants, which usually require an additional medical procedure for extraction.

More than 30 operations using the new graft have already been carried out in the country. The company that created the innovative product believes it could capture a significant share of the advanced medical equipment market in the near future.

Scientists in the BRICS countries are actively developing medical technologies. In Russia, experts at the International Research Institute of Intelligent Materials of Southern Federal University are developing a material for an implant that can subsequently transform into bone tissue. A report on this was published on the university’s website.

In Saudi Arabia, doctors at one of the capital’s hospitals performed the region’s first cochlear implant surgery using robotic arm technology. This was reported by the Saudi Press Agency.
