Kenya launches solar programme to power schools and cut energy costs

Pilot project aims to bring clean energy to 266 institutions while creating green jobs and supporting climate action

Kenya's President William Ruto launched a Solarisation Programme for basic education institutions, aiming to reduce energy costs and expand access to reliable power in Kenyan schools, as reported by Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.

The pilot phase of the programme will cover 266 schools and is expected to generate up to 150 megawatts of solar energy. Moreover, the president highlighted the project’s potential to create green jobs, strengthen climate action, and accelerate Kenya’s transition towards sustainable growth.

In addition to the solar initiative, the president commissioned a new dining hall and officially opened the 640-bed student accommodation.

The Solarisation Programme forms part of broader efforts to integrate renewable energy into public institutions across Kenya, supporting long-term sustainability goals while fostering economic opportunities in the green energy sector.
