Mauro Vieira: BRICS leaders to discuss criteria for accepting new members

Brazilian and Russian Presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Vladimir Putin may meet during the BRICS summit

BRICS leaders will discuss criteria for accepting new members at the summit in South Africa, taking into account the numerous applications to join the organisation, said Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira to Sputnik.

"The number of countries interested on joining BRICS shows its importance on the world stage. Now we need to discuss and agree on criteria for evaluating these applications, which will be done at the summit of presidents in South Africa in August," said Vieira. Brazil, in particular, supports the candidature of its strategic partner Argentina, added the minister.

"But first, as I said, we need to develop a roadmap for the group's future and reach consensus on the criteria, given the many requests we have received," concluded the minister.

BRICS brings together the world's largest emerging economies - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Several other countries, including Argentina, Iran, Indonesia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, are keen to join the economic bloc. South Africa, which took over the rotating BRICS presidency in January, will hold the 15th BRICS Summit from 22-24 August.

The presidents of Brazil and Russia may meet at the BRICS summit that will be held in South Africa.

"I think the first opportunity for a meeting (of the two presidents) could be at the BRICS summit in South Africa, but since the election of President Lula (30 October 2022) they have already communicated twice and President Putin received in Moscow the special envoy Celso Amorim," said the Brazilian foreign minister.

Vieira recalled that he had three meetings with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, as reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.
