Projects in the field of AI and green technologies win BRICS Young Innovator Prize

The list of winners includes researchers from Brazil, China and Russia

The winners of the VII BRICS Young Innovator Prize were announced at the IV Young Scientists Congress at the Sirius University of Science and Technology.

The participants worked on projects related to the application of artificial intelligence and green technologies in various industries, including chemical, food and agriculture. Research was also selected in a separate nomination "Palladium in Future Technologies".

The international jury selected three winners. The winner was a young scientist from Brazil, Professor Thiago Edwiges of the Federal University of Technology of Parana. He worked on a solution to the problem of utilisation of waste arising from sugar cane processing. The researcher proposed to use solid and liquid materials to produce fuel based on a mixture of methane and hydrogen.

Second place went to a project by Yuan Wu, a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China. The development is a new material that can be used in the rubber industry. The new technology will reduce the use of zinc oxide in the production of rubber products, including tyres, which will make these products more environmentally friendly.

The development of Russian Dmitry Shadrin from the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) took third place. The researcher presented a project of a digital system of natural fire prevention based on an updated geographical grid, weather forecast data and information on previous fires processed by artificial intelligence. It is assumed that the accuracy of such a model can reach 85 per cent.

The winner in the special category was Xin Cai from China's Tongji University in Shanghai. The researcher received new samples of nanopowders containing palladium. It is expected that the use of these catalysts in hydrogen energy will make it more efficient and affordable for mass application.

This year, over 7,000 people from more than 60 countries are taking part in the events of the Young Scientists Congress. TV BRICS is the official media partner of the event. The organisers are the Roscongress Foundation, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and the Coordination Council for Youth Affairs in the Scientific and Educational Spheres of the Presidential Council for Science and Education.
