Saudi Arabia expands the territorial map to combat desertification
The National Center evaluates the condition of the lands
The National Centre for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification in Saudi Arabia has finished the first part of a project to evaluate the level of land degradation throughout the Kingdom, producing 246 comprehensive maps, which is a significant milestone in the fight against desertification. This is reported by Arab News.
The source claims that these maps offer significant insights into the patterns of desertification and the present condition of land degradation in different areas. The teams at the centre have worked hard to better understand the mechanisms behind land deterioration and desertification and to find practical countermeasures.
The initiative brought together cutting-edge technologies and conventional techniques for gathering data, such as field research, remote sensing techniques, and geographic information systems.
Among the tasks assigned for the field work were gathering soil samples for examination, researching local flora, and examining satellite photos.
The project's second phase has begun, with the Riyadh region at the forefront, according to the Centre. Currently, the main priorities will be to categorise the types and causes of land degradation, identify the places most susceptible to desertification, and carry out additional field research to gather more comprehensive data.
