Saudi Arabia leads International Coral Reef Initiative

Saudi Arabia has officially become the 14th chair of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI). The decision was made unanimously at the 38th general meeting of ICRI held in Jeddah. This was reported by Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The initiative has so far been joined by 102 participants, including 45 states that account for 75 per cent of the world's coral reefs. Representing the kingdom as chairman will be the General Organisation for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles in the Red Sea (SHAMS).

It is noted that during this period, Saudi Arabia plans to expand participation in ICRI to cover 90 per cent of the world's coral reefs, integrate their management into global policies and develop strategies for biodiversity conservation. Particular attention will be paid to the application of technology and artificial intelligence for reef monitoring, as well as strengthening international cooperation in the Red Sea, South Asia, and East Africa regions.

In addition, there are plans to launch a strategy targeting the younger generation and raise global awareness through key events including the UN Ocean Conference.
