South Africa's Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries publishes initiative to ban captive breeding of lions

According to a statement from Environment Minister Barbara Creecy, Cabinet has approved the publication of the report and its recommendations for further implementation

A Ministerial Task Force (MTF) to develop guidelines on the issue was appointed in December 2022 on the recommendation of the High Level Panel on Issues Relating to the Management, Breeding, Hunting, Trade and Governance of Elephants, Lions, Leopards and Rhinos.

The Panel recommended the closure of the captive breeding sector, including the keeping of lions in captivity, or the commercial use of captive lions. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

The paper addresses the following key issues: Conduct a collaborative process with key stakeholders in the captive lion breeding industry, relevant permit issuing authorities and include all vulnerable workers.

The ministry's report, Creasy said, should be understood in the broader policy context of the White Paper on Conservation and Sustainable Use of Elephants, Lions, Leopards and Rhinos, which was approved by Cabinet last week for implementation.
