Timor-Leste may join ASEAN in 2025

The country was granted observer status in the association in 2022

Timor-Leste may soon join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This is reported by Vietnam News Agency (VNA), a partner of TV BRICS.

According to ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, the country has become much more active in ASEAN meetings, attending about 90 per cent of the meetings in the first quarter, compared to 83 per cent last year.

In terms of concrete steps, Kao Kim Hourn noted that a special coordination unit for ASEAN affairs has been established within the Timor-Leste government. This is to ensure that the country's internal structure is in line with the mechanisms of the association.

Malaysia hosted the 46th summit of the association, which approved the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045 – a key strategic document that defines the priorities of the association's development for the next 20 years. The declaration enshrines four areas of activity: politics and security, economy, socio-culture, and connectivity.
