Vietnam confirms To Lam as president for new term with unanimous backing
National Assembly vote confirms leadership continuity through 2031 with focus on innovation and economic transformation
To Lam has been unanimously re-elected as President of Vietnam for a new five-year term, following a vote at the 16th session of the National Assembly on 7 April, according to the government.
His new mandate will run from 2026 to 2031. The 69-year-old politician has held the presidency since May 2024, subsequently assuming the role of General Secretary of the ruling party in August of the same year, and being re-elected to that post in January 2026.
Following the vote, To Lam took the oath of office, reaffirming his commitment to building a developed, unified and inclusive society. He also outlined priorities for a new growth model based on science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation.
At the same session, Le Minh Hung was sworn in as Prime Minister for the 2026–2031 term.
International leaders extended congratulations on To Lam’s re-election. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi expressed confidence that bilateral relations between New Delhi and Hanoi would deepen further under his leadership, reports ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highlighted Vietnam’s importance as a key partner in Asia and voiced support for expanding strategic cooperation between the two countries.
President of Russia Vladimir Putin also expressed confidence that To Lam’s tenure would contribute to strengthening ties between Moscow and Hanoi, reaffirming readiness for continued dialogue and cooperation on bilateral, regional and international issues.
The re-election signals policy continuity in Vietnam’s leadership, with an emphasis on innovation-driven development and international partnership.
