Indian railways embrace innovation to boost safety and efficiency through cutting-edge technology

The advanced system promises to revolutionise track maintenance with state-of-the-art diagnostics

The Ministry of Railways in India has launched an initiative to empower startups, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), entrepreneurs, and innovators by funding the development of innovative, cost-effective solutions aimed at enhancing the safety and efficiency of its vast network.

This programme seeks to leverage advanced technologies to address operational challenges, ensuring safer and smoother rail journeys, as reported by Trinity Mirror, a partner of TV BRICS.

A critical focus area for Indian Railways is the safety of its track workers, including patrolmen, trackmen, and signal maintainers, particularly in challenging environments such as foggy weather, tunnels, and curves. To mitigate risks, the Ministry is exploring advanced warning systems to alert maintenance crews of approaching trains, especially in block sections.

Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the Integrated Track Monitoring System (ITMS). This advanced system promises to revolutionise track maintenance with state-of-the-art diagnostics. Equipped with laser sensors, high-speed cameras, accelerometers, and GPS, ITMS can monitor track conditions at speeds ranging from 20 to 200 km/h.

The ITMS integrates seamlessly with the Railways’ Track Management System (TMS), providing real-time defect alerts via SMS and email. This ensures rapid responses to potential issues, reducing disruptions and enhancing safety.

Key features of the ITMS include contactless laser monitoring for precise data collection, real-time defect alerts, onboard edge servers for instant data processing, and infringement detection to identify obstructions and track defects.

By integrating advanced technologies and fostering collaboration with innovative enterprises, Indian Railways is taking bold steps to ensure safer operations and establish itself as a leader in railway modernisation, the source claims.
