Iran carries out aerial survey of Jiroft's archaeological sites
High-tech survey reveals hidden secrets of Iran’s Bronze age civilisation
For the first time, archaeologists have used aerial imaging to map key Bronze Age ruins in Jiroft, a historically significant region in southern Iran dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
Jiroft is considered a cradle of ancient civilisation, home to the Halilrud culture, known for its unique artefacts and urban settlements. The area gained attention in the early 2000s when floods exposed ancient tombs, revealing relics from the Early Bronze Age. Locals initially stumbled upon these artefacts, leading to both looting and scholarly interest.
Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage, Seyyed Reza Salehi-Amiri, recently emphasised Jiroft’s global importance, urging greater efforts to promote its heritage. Despite its significance, Jiroft has been overshadowed by better-known sites like Mesopotamia. Experts argue that the Jiroft Plain holds millennia of continuous human history, making it a vital but understudied archaeological treasure.
