Malaysia on track to meet nearly half of SDG targets by 2030

Latest national data indicates progress well above global averages, with major gains in education and sustainable consumption

Malaysia is projected to reach 49 per cent of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets by 2030, according to an analysis of national data from 2023. The forecast, presented by the Deputy Economy Minister, places the country significantly ahead of the global completion average of 18 per cent reported this year.  This is reported by VNA, a partner of TV BRICS.

The minister highlighted that two goals demonstrated the strongest performance: SDG 4 on Quality Education, achieving 70 per cent, and SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, at 64 per cent. Officials attributed these advances to broad-based access to education, rising recycling rates and improvements in the management of hazardous waste.

Eight additional goals were reported to be performing above the national average, including those related to gender equality, clean and affordable energy, sustainable urban development and strengthened global partnerships.

Malaysia’s progress is measured using the framework developed by the Department of Statistics, which outlines 17 goals, 169 targets and 244 indicators covering economic, social and environmental dimensions. Malaysia, alongside 193 other nations, remains committed to the 2030 Agenda under the principle of “Leaving No One Behind.”
