Bangkok Symphony Orchestra performs in Russia

Melodies blend global classical traditions with ethnic influences

The Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra took to the stage in Moscow as part of its debut tour in Russia. The ensemble from Thailand opened the concert with a piece by composer Narongrit Dhamabutra.

"In my works, I use the orchestra to imitate traditional Thai folk instruments and draw upon Thailand’s national dance, Khon, employing all the customary rhythmic patterns," he noted.

The music fused elements of global classical heritage with ethnic nuances. The concert programme included compositions by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya. According to the orchestra's conductor Vanich Potavanich, the performance was a reflection on the creative legacy of Russian composer Sergey Rachmaninoff.

The evening also featured a cycle of fantasies based on works by King Rama IX, Bhumibol Adulyadej, who composed both symphonic and jazz music.

The Embassy of Thailand highlighted the significant role of art in strengthening relations between the two nations. Russia’s Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova, in turn, emphasised the importance of cultural collaboration.

"I am confident that our bilateral cooperation in the field of culture will continue to develop and reinforce the mutual understanding and trust established during the Cross Year of Cultural Exchanges between Russia and Thailand," she said.

Previously, the orchestra performed to a full house at the Philharmonic in Saint Petersburg and to a packed Zaryadye Concert Hall in Moscow.
