Brazil advances marine spatial planning to mitigate climate impact on oceans

The Government of Brazil has officially implemented Marine Spatial Planning, a strategic instrument designed to balance marine development, environmental sustainability, and social equity. This is reported by the official website of the Brazil Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.

The initiative, coordinated by the Interministerial Commission for Marine Resources with active participation from the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, aims to guide the sustainable use of the country’s marine spaces amid accelerating climate change.

Marine ecosystems play a critical role in regulating global climate by absorbing approximately 91 per cent of the excess heat produced by greenhouse gas emissions. Considering this, Brazil is expanding the Marine Spatial Planning across the South, Southeast, Northeast and North regions, with a national rollout planned by 2030.

The plan integrates public policies and sectoral strategies to ensure responsible marine occupation tailored to regional environmental and socio-economic characteristics.

According to the source, it also enhances legal security for essential maritime activities, including fisheries, shipping, tourism, and renewable energy production.
