Brazil and Indonesia to sign new bilateral agreements to deepen cooperation in trade and food security

This is President Prabowo’s first official visit to Brazil since Indonesia became a full member of BRICS in January 2025

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva received President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto at the Palacio do Planalto for an official bilateral meeting that could result in the signing of five cooperation agreements. This is President Prabowo’s first official visit to Brazil since Indonesia became a full member of BRICS in January 2025, as reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.

The agreements cover sanitary and phytosanitary standards, mutual legal assistance, and educational cooperation. These instruments are expected to enhance institutional coordination and facilitate increased exchanges in key areas of strategic interest to both countries.

The two leaders also discussed preparations for a possible visit by President Lula to Indonesia in October, which may coincide with the ASEAN Summit. Both sides reaffirmed their intention to intensify high-level political dialogue and expand cooperation across multilateral platforms, including BRICS and ASEAN.

Food security and climate action featured prominently on the agenda. President Lula reiterated Brazil’s invitation for Indonesia to participate in the Food Security Summit scheduled for September in Fortaleza. Brazil is also working to expand its beef exports to the Indonesian market while evaluating options to enable the import of Indonesian poultry products, steps aimed at fostering more balanced agricultural trade between the two countries.

President Prabowo’s visit comes days after President Lula hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Brasilia, where Brazil and India signed six agreements in areas including energy, digitalisation, agriculture, and data protection.
