Brazil successfully fights poverty with Ruas Visiveis programme

The Ruas Visíveis programme was launched last December

Rio de Janeiro is the first city in Brazil to implement the National Plan for Visible Streets, which provides actions to help the homeless population.

Ruas Visiveis was launched last December and includes dozens of actions to enforce human rights and citizenship in seven axes: social assistance and food; health; institutional violence; citizenship, education and culture; housing; work and income; and production and data management. This is reported by Toda Palavra, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship, more than 20,000 people can benefit from the programme.

Among the activities planned for the municipality are the Civic Housing Program, which aims to facilitate access to housing for these people under the supervision of professional teams; the Centre for Access to Rights and Social Inclusion, a space for coexistence, leisure, training, access to justice and contact with the public services network; and the Street Support Point, which offers various services such as washing clothes, bathrooms, drinking fountains and lockers.

Also planned are the formation of leaders of social movements aimed at the homeless population; the distribution of items for thermal protection in winter; and the training of municipal guards to develop a culture of respect for this population.
