China completes comprehensive agricultural germplasm survey with groundbreaking discoveries

51 new local species were identified, while 10 species previously believed to be extinct were rediscovered

China has concluded its third nationwide survey of agricultural germplasm resources, achieving significant milestones in the mapping and conservation of the country's biological diversity, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

This extensive survey marks the largest and most inclusive effort to date, covering 2,323 agricultural counties across the nation, including previously unexplored regions such as arid zones, plateaus, and border areas.

Over the course of three years, the survey collected an impressive 139,000 crop germplasm samples and conducted an in-depth assessment of livestock and poultry resources. 51 new local species were identified, while 10 species previously believed to be extinct were rediscovered.

For the first time, aquaculture germplasm resources were included in the survey, leading to the documentation of 857 aquatic species. This addition underscores China's commitment to safeguarding its diverse ecosystems and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices, as reported by China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.

This effort sets the stage for enhanced resource management and agricultural innovation, further solidifying China's role in global biodiversity conservation.
