China unveils humanoid companion robots designed for social interaction and domestic assistance
They can recognise up to 20 different moods and offer emotional support. The emergence of such robots is seen as a significant, albeit controversial, step in the development of domestic robotics and social AI
A Chinese technology company has launched a new range of full-size, hyper-realistic humanoid robots – "emotional companions". They are designed to assist with household tasks, accompany people in their daily lives and facilitate social interaction, reports Global Times, a TV BRICS partner.
The robots are available in two versions: "male" and "female". The male model stands 183 cm tall and weighs around 42 kg, while the female model is 168 cm tall and weighs 35.2 kg.
According to the developers, the devices are capable of replicating over 90 per cent of basic human movements. The robots feature the world’s first large-scale model of "emotional" artificial intelligence (AI), which recognises over 20 shades of emotion with an accuracy of over 90 per cent. The system is designed for long-term interaction.
The range includes models across various price segments. However, the robots’ current price point is aimed at tech enthusiasts and corporate clients. The company expects that the transition to mass production will enable prices to be reduced over time.
To date, over 10,000 pre-orders have been received. The production plan for 2026 envisages the manufacture of up to 50,000 units.
The launch of the range has sparked debate on social media. Some users see such robots as a way to combat loneliness and a practical tool for everyday assistance – for example, to remind them to take their medication or provide support in emergencies. Others fear that emotional attachment to AI companions could reduce people’s interest in maintaining social connections.
