Chinese and Uzbek researchers launch joint archaeological mission in Fergana Valley

Transnational project aims to study ancient settlements and strengthen cultural and historical cooperation

A joint archaeological team from China’s Shanxi Province has arrived in Uzbekistan to begin extensive field research in the Fergana Valley. The mission brings together specialists from leading archaeological and academic institutions in Shanxi and is conducted in cooperation with a major Uzbek university. This is reported by  Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the Chinese research team, the project focuses on systematic surveys and excavations of ancient sites across the Fergana Valley. Planned work includes archaeological prospecting at the ancient settlement of Mugtepa and preliminary excavations at the Arsif burial site.

The researchers aim to examine the layout and construction methods of historical urban centres in the southern part of the valley, as well as burial practices in the region. Findings from the project are expected to deepen understanding of the historical interaction between China and Central Asia and support ongoing cultural and academic exchange.

The joint mission is scheduled to conclude on 30 December 2025.
