Dubai introduces advanced laboratory to strengthen food safety monitoring

New nanotechnology testing facility enhances food quality control and supports the emirate’s leadership in laboratory innovation

Dubai Municipality has launched an advanced laboratory dedicated to detecting nanoparticles in food products, marking a new step forward in the emirate’s efforts to strengthen food safety, improve product quality monitoring, and advance scientific innovation in laboratory services, as reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), a TV BRICS partner.

The new facility introduces specialised testing capabilities designed to identify and analyse nanoparticle substances used in processed foods. Equipped with advanced analytical technologies, the laboratory can deliver highly accurate test results within minutes, enabling faster regulatory oversight and more efficient decision-making.

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to modernise laboratory infrastructure and enhance technical capabilities in response to rapid developments in the food industry. Authorities noted that the increasing use of nanotechnology in food manufacturing has created a need for more sophisticated testing methods capable of assessing product safety and compliance with technical requirements.

The laboratory’s analytical systems are designed to measure particle size, distribution, and physical and chemical characteristics, allowing specialists to distinguish between conventional substances and engineered nanoparticles. This capability is expected to strengthen market surveillance and support the protection of consumer health.

The facility is expected to provide specialised support to regulatory bodies and public-sector institutions while contributing to the development of internationally recognised testing and calibration standards.

Designed for rapid response and high operational efficiency, the facility is capable of processing dozens of samples daily while maintaining the flexibility to expand capacity during emergency situations. Officials expect the enhanced testing capabilities to improve inspection procedures, support evidence-based regulatory decisions, and contribute to higher standards of food safety across the market.
