Egypt targets 42% renewable energy by 2030

Egypt has announced plans to increase the share of renewable energy in its power mix to more than 42 per cent by 2030, with a further goal of reaching 60 per cent by 2040, according to the country’s latest energy strategy updates. 

The announcement was made by Electricity Minister Mahmoud Essmat during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to review progress on renewable energy projects and efforts to strengthen the national grid, reports Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

Madbouly reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding the renewable energy sector, highlighting ongoing measures to provide greater incentives and streamline investment in this vital industry.

Essmat outlined plans for new renewable capacity – including solar, wind, and battery storage – to be added to the national grid between 2026 and 2030. This includes the construction of 11 new ultra-high-voltage substations with a total capacity of 4,570 MVA, upgrades to 500 kV and 220 kV networks, and the development of four new high-voltage substations with additional capacity at the 66 kV level.

The minister also discussed the allocation of land for the New and Renewable Energy Authority to develop new power generation facilities, underscoring the government’s drive to expand Egypt’s clean energy infrastructure.
