Ethiopia aims to increase coffee production

Ethiopia's annual coffee production has reached 1 million tonnes over the past five years

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced significant progress in Ethiopia's coffee production, strengthening the country's position as a home country and major player in the global coffee market.

Ethiopia's annual coffee production has grown impressively over the past five years and now reaches 1 million tonnes, double the previous figure of 500,000 tonnes. This is reported by Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.

In fiscal year 2016, the coffee sector's revenues exceeded US$1.4 billion, and this year the government has set an ambitious target of US$2 billion.

The introduction of modern irrigation systems and mechanised harvesting methods has significantly increased productivity, achieving yields of up to 60 quintals per hectare. These achievements underline Ethiopia's ambition to develop the coffee industry and increase its share of the global market.
