Ethiopia starts innovative studies for sustainable transboundary groundwater management
Ethiopia has unveiled a pioneering initiative to secure sustainable water resources by launching detailed studies on the equitable management of transboundary groundwater.
Driven by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water and Energy, this strategic move addresses the rising demand for water, spurred by urbanisation, a growing population, and the impact of climate change. This is reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.
State Minister of Water and Energy, Abraha Adugna, highlighted the critical need for effective leadership in managing the country’s rich water resources, including both surface and underground supplies.
Recognising the strains on existing surface water supplies, the Ministry has prioritised groundwater as a resilient alternative, especially for regions frequently facing water shortages. A recently released topography map further underscores the importance of transboundary groundwater sources, prompting the Ministry’s proactive studies to assess these valuable reserves.
Abraha Adugna expressed confidence in Ethiopia’s ability to utilise underground water resources to fulfil community needs across the country. He added that by collaborating with neighbouring nations, Ethiopia is committed to promoting fair access to these shared resources, advancing both regional cooperation and sustainable water management.
This strategic initiative addresses Ethiopia’s immediate water challenges while also laying a foundation for long-term water security.
