Hourly wages to increase in South Africa

The law will come into force from the first of March this year

Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi has announced the new National Minimum Wage (NMW), which will rise from R25.42 to R27.58 per hour worked.

In a statement on Saturday, the Department of Employment and Labour said the new NMW will take effect from 1 March 2024.

The law applies to all employees and their employers, with the exception of employees of the South African National Defence Force, the National Intelligence Agency and the South African Secret Service. This is reported by Pretoria News, a partner of TV BRICS.

The Act does not apply to volunteers – persons who perform work for another person and do not receive or are not entitled to receive any remuneration for their work.

The NMW is the minimum amount of pay that an employer is legally obliged to pay employees for work done. It does not include allowances (such as transport, tools or equipment needed for work, food or accommodation), tips and bonuses.
