India approves fully digital scheme to transform academic research access for the entire nation
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to the landmark One Nation One Subscription scheme, aimed at providing universal access to scholarly research articles and journals for government higher education institutions and research labs.
This scheme is allocated a budget of US$71.2 million for three years (2025-2027) and will be implemented through a streamlined, fully digital process. This is reported by ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.
The initiative aligns with the objectives, aiming to democratise access to academic resources and promote a robust culture of research across India. According to the source, the scheme will benefit over 6,300 institutions and nearly 1.8 crore students, researchers, and faculty members nationwide.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the scheme as a "game-changer", highlighting its potential to position India as a global hub of research and learning. "The Cabinet has approved 'One Nation One Subscription', which will strengthen our efforts to become a hub for research, learning, and knowledge. It will also encourage interdisciplinary studies," Modi stated.
The Indian government will also run campaigns to educate users on accessing these resources, ensuring maximum usage.
The Cabinet also approved several other pivotal schemes, including the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) to promote sustainable agricultural practices, with a budget of US$32.6 million through 2028.
According to the source, these initiatives reflect the government’s comprehensive strategy to drive progress in education, agriculture, and innovation, positioning India as a leader in sustainable development and technological advancement.
