Nigeria and UNESCO launch digital teacher training programme to strengthen education and mobile learning
New initiative focuses on digital skills, female leadership and technology-driven professional development

Nigeria has launched a new digital education initiative in partnership with UNESCO to enhance teachers' professional development through mobile learning technologies, with a particular focus on empowering female educators and expanding access to quality training, as reported by News Agency of Nigeria, a TV BRICS partner.
The initiative aligns with Nigeria's Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which aims to improve learning outcomes, modernise teacher training and promote innovation through technology-based education.
Education officials said continuous professional development remains one of the most effective tools for improving teaching quality, particularly as digital technologies reshape classrooms and learning methods. Mobile learning platforms are expected to provide educators with flexible access to new skills regardless of their location, helping bridge educational gaps between urban and rural areas. The project also supports teachers working in remote communities by providing inclusive digital learning opportunities.
Furthermore, the training workshop, implemented by UNESCO's International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA), brings together educators from Nigeria's six geopolitical zones for three days of intensive capacity building. Participants are expected to transfer the knowledge and digital teaching methods acquired during the programme to colleagues in their schools and local communities, creating a wider multiplier effect across the education sector.
Officials described the project as an important step towards building a more inclusive, technology-enabled education system while strengthening teachers' ability to respond to evolving learning needs and preparing students for an increasingly digital future.
