Indian researchers discover rare animal species in Tamil Nadu

The study recorded 35 other mammal species, as well as 67 species of plants and 175 bird species, 12 of which are listed as vulnerable

In a remarkable ecological discovery, researchers have identified the presence of the smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) in the dense forest regions at the origin of the Vaigai River in Tamil Nadu. This is reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

Classified as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), this rare species marks an important finding for conservationists and highlights the ecological significance of the Vaigai’s source region.

Alongside the otters, the comprehensive study recorded 35 other mammal species, including deer and mongoose, as well as 67 species of plants and 175 bird species, 12 of which are also listed as vulnerable.

This study sheds light on the critical need for sustainable environmental management to protect both rare wildlife and essential water resources for future generations.
